How to Care for and Preserve Artworks at Home

Do you have art works in your home? Have you notice damages on them?  Would you like to keep the paints looking as new ones?

Well in this article we are going to talk about some practical, easy and economical tips to preserve our art portraits and take care of our art over the years maintaining its value and beauty. The most important one it’s the last one:

1.     Reduce light exposure

Either exposure to artificial light or sun light, it is a critical factor of deterioration in art works. Ultraviolet (UV) radiation causes discoloration in basically any material, reducing color uniformity and quality. The solution is avoiding any type of direct light exposure and move your art works to darker places with controlled light exposure, keep the curtain closed and reduce the unnecessary light contact.

2.     The best location

Humidity, temperature, drafts and heat sources are enemies of works of art. Don’t place your art portraits near: crowded spaces, fireplaces, outdoors, excessively humid or leaky places, heating vents, air-conditionings, under pipes, humidifier, radiators, etc.

3.     Temperature

This is something that few people know but climate and temperature changes produce changes in art works. A simple example of this is linen, as wood expands for temperature and humidity, linen changes as well, our recommendation? Don’t place your art pieces outdoors and if it’s possible regulate the temperature inside of your home relative humidity between 40% and 60% and constant temperature between 18°C and 22°C to avoid expansion and contraction the of materials.

4.     Cleaning

Pollution is everywhere, either you live in the countryside or in city, contamination such as fumes, dust or waste is everywhere and generally some of these particles fall on your art portraits, dirtying and damaging them. So, for this reason you MUST do a periodic cleaning, avoid any type of chemical products, some of them damage the paint in your art paintings instead of, try to clean frequently with a soft duster and if it is necessary, carry out a restoration of your art portraits with professionals in the field.

5.     Transport

Any of these tips will be in vain if you do not transport your art works in the proper way, without insurance or experts in these specific pieces. Many people keep their art in the best conditions and without forgetting any of these previous tips, but when they move to another house they don’t pay for appropriate transportation or also the case when you go to buy an art portrait and you can’t find the best shipping company for it. It’s for this reason we recommend that before purchasing art you make sure that the gallery offers you an adequate transport that takes care of and protects your works of art during the trip. And for this, online galleries are the best option.
